This article meant to give you a couple of pointers and show general outlines of personal security to use the web safely. Personal internet security has 2 legs actually, one is to be safe in real world and other is keep your personal data safe.
First of all, you should not trust anyone who you met on web. If we think reverse, try to think that you are the dangerous one and pretend that you found a victim. On web, everyone is anonymous, no one really knows about who you are. And this gives you the opportunity of pretending like who you want. For example if you talk to someone on web and tell that you are police, not everyone but you will find someone who believes. Pictures and videos can be shared after recorded, even if you have a video conversation, the video you see may not be a live one. I am not saying you should be a paranoid, but be aware and don't give personal information to anyone you actually don't know such as adress, telephone, bank accounts, credit card numbers, etc.
Second part of internet security is about your personal data. Think reverse again. You are trying to capture someone else's personal information, how?
- You can ask directly.
- Search through social media like Facebook accounts, Twitter, etc.
- Search full name in Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
- Check that person's computer without notice
- Ask that person to fill in a form in a tricky way.
- Ask someone who knows that person
- Install a program on that person's computer to send everything to you
These are the most common ways to get information. Of course if such thing happens, you have rights but the main thing is to prevent these by being aware. Most of these tries requires your confirmation so you should be careful what info you enter on a webpage.
